Some guaranteed issue final expense policies provide a limited benefit for death from natural causes during the first two policy years. This is often called a graded death benefit or waiting period, but the exact policy wording controls.
Natural-cause death in years one and two
Under the product described for this site, the early natural-cause benefit is generally a return of premiums plus interest according to the policy. It is not the full face amount.
Accidental death
The treatment of accidental death may be different from natural-cause death. The full-benefit conditions, exclusions and effective date must be confirmed from the issued California policy before relying on them.
After the initial period
After the first two policy years, the full death benefit may be payable for covered deaths, subject to the contract, exclusions, and payment of required premiums. Submitting a lead form does not start the two-year period.
